Harmsworth`s Universal Encyclopedia 1940s.
The gallant figure of A Cavalier: Time of Louis XIII by Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier, a French Classicist painter and sculptor famous for his depictions of Napoleon, his armies and military themes. He documented sieges and manoeuvres and was the teacher of Ãâ°douard Detaille.
Cavalier was first used by Roundheads as a term of abuse for the wealthier Royalist supporters of King Charles I and his son Charles II of England during the English Civil War, the Interregnum, and the Restoration. It was later adopted by the Royalists themselves. |
