| Avenches is a small town in the French-speaking part of Switzerland which had a glorious past: during the Roman occupation, Aventicum (the old name of Avenches) was the capital of the Helvetia Province. The Roman Amphitheatre, sitting at the foot of the medieval city is still in used today. The theatre has been investigated only partially. It was built in the first half of the second century. It was 106.80 m. wide, its orchestra 20 m. It had five entrances (vomitoria) and a capacity of 11000-12400. |
