| The castle began as a simple stone dwelling house, built in 1482 by László Károlyi Láncz, with the permission of the Hungarian king, Matthias Corvinus, to strengthen the defense against the Turks. Later, in 1592, Mihály Károlyi transformed the building into a fortress, during the Turkish attacks. Then, József Károlyi gave the castle a new Baroque shape in 1794, transforming it into his family residence.Today, the castle is one of the most impressive in Romania. It combines Baroque elements from the 18th century, has become a museum of history and natural sciences and attracts a lot of visitors every year. |
