| Robert "Bob" Dole appears at a book signing for his work, `One Soldier`s Story: A Memoir,` in New York City on April 13, 2005. The Kansan, born on July 22, 1923, was severely wounded in World War Two. Dole was a Kansas U.S. Senator and leader of the Republicans there from 1985-1996. He was an unsuccessful candidate for Vice President in 1976 and for President in 1996.
