| River Spaarne and the steel lift-bridge in the center of Haarlem. The bridge is more than 700 years old. The foundations of the first bridge were found in in 1863. At the background two identical gables. When the expansion of Haarlem was finally begun in 1680, most wealthy citizens had already left Haarlem for Amsterdam and only a few remained to build new residences here. Depending on the wealth of the owner of the house, the brick walls were covered or ornamented with elements of natural stone and overdoor ornaments. |
