Tintern abbey in welsh abaty tynoyrn. founded on the 9th of may 1113 by walter de clare lord of Chepstow. situated in the village of tintern in Monmouthshire on the banks of the river wye, which forms the border of England and wales. it was the first Cistercian foundation in wales.it fell into ruins after the dissolution of the monostries in the 16th century
