Mexican hat coneflower genus Ratibida species columnifera aster family asteraceae Common names are Mexican hat, prairie coneflower, upright prairie coneflower, red-spike Mexican hat, long-headed coneflower, thimbleflower. Single blossom on tall stem, with leaves at base. Flower consists of a long central cone surrounded at the base by drooping petals similar in shape to a sombrero or 10-gallon hat. Central cone is brownish red. Wide, oval petals are all yellow, all red, or red edged with yellow. Flowers attract bees and butterflies, seeds attract birds. Deer resistant. Drought tolerant perennial, native to the US, blooms all summer.
