High resolution image of red wooden chopsticks with blue and yellow dragon. Chopsticks are shaped pairs of equal length sticks that have been used as the traditional ancient culinary utensils in virtually all of the East Asian countries such as China, Vietnam, Korea, Taiwan and Japan for over six thousand years. Chopsticks were first used by the Chinese and later spread to the neighboring countries of Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Bhutan, Indonesia, Burma, North Korea, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan. They can also be found in some areas of Tibet and Nepal that are close to Han Chinese populations. Chopsticks are smoothed and frequently tapered, and are commonly made of bamboo, plastic, wood, or stainless steel. They are less commonly made from gold, porcelain, silver, ivory or jade. Chopsticks are held in the dominant hand, between the thumb and fingers, and used to pick up pieces of food.
