Red-eared terrapins. trachemys scripts elegans. family emydidae. genus trachemys. order: testudines. these turtles are very invasive. they live typically between 20-30 years but can live to 40. originated in the mississippi river area and the gulf of mexico. females usually are larger than the males. they have a red stripe on each side of their head. they make good pets but they do present an infection risk,especially salmonella. |
