| The first day of the lunisolar Hindu calendar, Puthandu or Puthuvarudam is traditionally celebrated in South and South East Asia as the Tamil New Year, but is known by other names such as Vishu in Kerala, and Vaisakhi or Baisakhi in central and northern India. Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple in Little India district is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali and is one of the oldest temples in Singapore, built by Indian migrant workers in the late 19th century. |
