Plasencia is a walled market city in the province of Caceres in the Spanish Extremadura and the town has a historic quarter that is a consequence of the city`s strategic location along the Silver Route, or Ruta de la Plata. The Old Cathedral of Plasencia or Catedral de Santa Maria is a Roman Catholic temple and an example of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture, it is one of the most notable buildings in the town. The cathedral was declared a Monumento Historico-Artistico belonging to the National Artistic Treasury of Spain by a decree of 3 June 1931.
