This plant has a distinctive appearance because it has two types of ental with clearly different functions and forms, with one type of ental having branches shaped like deer antlers. It can grow wild in various corners of tropical and subtropical areas of Asia, Africa and Australia, with one type found in the mountains of South America. Many types of Platycerium are able to survive in dry conditions without rain (xeric) and have the Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) photosynthesis pathway.
