| Part of the rift valley at Pingvellir caused by tectonic plate movement of the North American and Eurasian plates along the Mid Atlantic Ridge which are ripping the land apart, widening Iceland by 1.5cm a year. The continental drift can be clearly seen in the cracks or faults which traverse the region, the biggest one, Almannagjá, being a veritable canyon. This also causes many earthquakes in the area. |
