The pier at Paignton was paid for by a barrister Arthur Hyde Dendy and designed by George Souden. It opened in 1878. The 780foot long pier had the usual grand Pavillion where many shows and entertainments took place. It was later bout by Devon Dock a steam ship company and was used by paddle steamers going between Brixham and Torquay. A fire in 1919 burnt the end and pavillion and it was not rebuilt until after WW11. In 1980 a new Pavillion was added and now there are fair rides and slot machines along the pier.
