Pidurangala is a rocky promontory in central Sri Lanka, in the Matale district, about 1 km north of the better-known Sigiriya rock. These bare peaks rise abruptly from the low plateaus that extend the mountain range in the centre of the country. On the site of an ancient Buddhist monastery, Pidurangala is also an archaeological site. Caves shelter a temple, Sigiri Pidurangala Raja Maha Viharaya, and the monumental brick statue of a reclining Buddha. |
