Closed in the boulevards drawn on the old medieval walls, the historical center of Florence collects the most important sites of the cultural heritage of the city. Delimited by the wall circuit of the fourteenth century, built due to the economic and commercial power achieved at that time, it has experienced its maximum splendor in the next two centuries.
The spiritual center of the city is Piazza del Duomo with the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, flanked by the Campaigns of Giotto and directed to the Baptistery of Saint John with the `Gates of Paradise` by Lorenzo Ghiberti. From here to the north is Palazzo Medici Riccardi by Michelozzo, Basilica of St. Lawrence by Filippo Brunelleschi, with the precious sacrifices of Donatello and Michelangelo. Moreover, the San Marco Museum with masterpieces by Fra Angelico, the Accademia Gallery which houses, among other works, David de Michelangelo 1501-1504 and Piazza della Santissima Annunziata with the Innogents` Lodge by Filippo Brunelleschi.
