In all the years I live in Western North Carolina I never got a change to visit Laurel Falls in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Got up early and drove to the falls hoping to be one of the only visitor there. A few cars in the parking, made me so excited. Laurel Fall get its name from the Mountain Laurel that grows along the trail and around the falls in May. The 2.3 mile round trip hike up is somewhat paved, with rough patches washed away was added to the trail in 1963 to prevent erosion. The short hike is mostly in the upward direction so there is no wheelchair as you climb roughly 314 feet in elevation. Please keep children close by as there are some very steep drop-offs, especially as you get closer to the falls.
