The expression denoting the artistic direction of Impressionism was derived from the name of this painting. The work captures the early morning in the northern French port of Le Havre. Although Monet's painting is dated to 1872, he did not finish working on it until 1873, so sometimes we can also see this date of creation. While working, Monet made quick, delicate touches of the brush, the work seems sketchy and immediate, from the point of view of the official art of the time, almost unfinished - this was the main reservation of contemporary critics, but the style is characteristic of the Impressionists. As Monet himself emphasized, the painting does not capture exactly the scene itself, but the mood (impression) that impressed him at that moment.
