Innsbruck is a city in western Austria, capital of the state of Tyrol. Initially a fortified enclave in 1180, Innsbruck became a city in the early thirteenth century, and supplanted Merano as the capital of Tyrol in 1420.2 Its history is linked to names such as Philippine Welser or Andreas Hofer. However, it was Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, the best-known personality, who bequeathed to the city a heritage of cultural jewels such as the "Golden Roof".
