Before gas or diesel ships, we had steam ships to go up and down the bays, bringing goods and peoples from inland villages to the major cities of California. The town of Petaluma was always known for and now famous for the chicken farms. The steamship Petaluma was named for this town, and was the very last steamship to sail. Built in 1914, the wheal is 18 feet tall. The boat was finally retired in 1950, and after catching fire in 1956, sank. Fortunately the wheal had been saved, and is now an historic monument.
