The outer white ferry bridge, the first full steel structure riveted bridge in China and the only unequal high truss bridge, is also the fourth bridge that has been completed in the same position in the vicinity of the Suzhou River estuary since 1856. Because it is at the junction of Suzhou River and Huangpu River, it becomes an important traffic route connecting Huangpu and Hongkou. The current Bai Bai Du bridge was opened to traffic in January 20, 1908. Due to its rich history and unique design, Wai Bai Du bridge has become one of the symbols of Shanghai, and is also a symbol of Shanghai`s modernization and industrialization. In February 15, 1994, the Shanghai Municipal People`s government listed the Wai Bai Du bridge as one of the excellent historical conservation buildings. In a rapidly changing city like Shanghai, the Wai Bai Du bridge still has a unique charm. Since its completion in 1908, the outer bridge has become an integral part of the skyline of Shanghai.
