In 1856, the merchant Amable Cyprien Prévost acquired two adjoining lots on the east side of Jacques Cartier Square with houses in front and outbuildings in the rear. The following year, he replaced one of the old structures with a new brick building from where he would operate a grocery store. In 1865, Prévost had the houses on the front lot demolished and construction began for a four and a half storey building.
