The bell in the photo belonged to the Basilica of Nossa Senhora da Penha, in Recife. It was cast in bronze in 1881 in Veneto Italy at the request of Friar Venâncio da Ferrara, responsible for the construction of the basilica. The piece has a rich ornamentation and neo-Gothic elements. Bells were used to announce the hours, events important to the community beyond the beginning and end of masses.
