Laacher See, cometimes refereed as Laach Lake, is a volcanic caldera lake in the east of the Eifel. The Vulkaneifel is a volcanic are north of the Mosel and west of the Rhine. The lake is mostly surrounded by mountains forming a caldera much bigger than the lake. During the medieval era the lake level was lowered by flooding former mines with the water. That way Maria Laach Abby could get more fertile land around the lake.
