The monument of Vittorio Emanuele II or Altar of the Fatherland was designed by Giuseppe Sacconi and erected to celebrate Italian independence 1885-1911. It rises at the base of the Capitol, in the heart of Rome, where it was built by breaking with its enormous size the old proportions between the hill and the surrounding area. The Venetian sculptor Chiaradia worked for 20 years at the king`s equestrian statue.
