Monte Alban, UNESCO World Heritage. The terraces, dams, canals, pyramids and artificial hills of Monte Albán were literally carved out of the mountain. They are the symbols of a sacred place. The area has been inhabited for 1,500 years by a succession of peoples, such as the Olmec, the Zapotec and the Mixtec. The historic center of the nearby city of Oaxaca – built according to a grid pattern – is a good example of Spanish colonial urban design. The strength and size of the city's buildings show that they are adapted to the earthquake-prone region in which these architectural jewels are located.
