| Butterfly Melanargia galathea, Marble White, on meadow crown. This butterfly has a wingspan of 37 to 52 mm. The species is easy to recognize by the black and white checkerboard pattern. Because of the eye spots on the underside, they cannot be confused with whites. The underside of males consists of black-outlined white and gray areas. On the hind wing there are two black eye spots on the front and another four along the rear edge. Females have exactly the same pattern, but then in cream and brown. The fringe around the wings consists of white moons. |
