| The Piazza Sordello in mediaeval city of Mantua, , Lombardy, Italy Toward the Torre della Gabbia and the Basilica di Sant´Andrea. The tower built by the Acerbi family was sold in 1281 to Pinamonte Bonacolsi. After the decline of the Bonacolsi family, the tower was neglected for a long time until it was renovated to be included in the underlying Guerrieri Gonzaga palace. In particular, the facade facing the current Via Cavour was redone.The tower acquired its current name when, in 1576, Duke Guglielmo Gonzaga built the large iron cage as an "open-air prison". |
