This Victorian mansion located in Virginia City, Nevada was built in 1859 by the young George Hearst, who began to amass the Hearst fortune while he lived here. The building was later occupied by John Mackay, during a time when this historic town was considered one of the world's richest cities, thanks to the discovery of the Comstock Lode, the largest gold vein ever mined. John Mackay was a Comstock Tycoon who made millions of dollars during this time period. Many of the original furnishings in his house can still be viewed on a self-guided tour of what is now Mackay Mansion Museum, a National Historic Landmark.
