Yugoslav Shepherd Dog, or Å arplaninac or colloquially Å arac, is a guard dog breed that was created on the Balkan Peninsula. It is used to guard flocks of sheep on mountain pastures from predators, as well as a service dog. It was registered in the FCI in 1939 under serial number #041. Its origin and genetic center is located on the Shar Mountain and the surrounding area, where it traditionally protected and guarded the herds of the Shar mountain range from wolves and brown bears.
