| Tree Lime kiln structures which were used to fire the lime to 2000 degrees, which converted it into calcium carbonate, calcium oxide, or lime. It was then crushed into a fine powder and shipped out on the nearby railroad tracks to Milwaukee and Chicago. Lime was used to whitewash buildings, to condition soil, treat animal hides and leather in tanneries, and for plaster and mortar. This Kiln was part of an old quarry now stating in Lime Kiln Park in Grafton, Wisconsin in Ozaukee County. |
