| Ships sail out here every day not only on the IJsselmeer but also on the North Sea and even as far as Africa to catch fish and bring them to the auction in Urk. Urk is known as a quiet rather pious island with a somewhat stubborn population. Urk is a former island now a peninsula which received negative news last week because the Urk youth started rioting out of dissatisfaction with the Corona measures. In the following 3 evenings it has been very restless throughout the country youth of non-Dutch descent in particular have been violent against the police and other aid workers and millions of euros in damage has been caused by vandalism and looting. Many arrests were the result and a few swindlers have already been brought to court by means of a summary judgment and have already been convicted. |
