Located on a small peninsula about 400 m wide stands the lighthouse of Cabo de Palos, belonging to the municipality of Cartagena. In the site that currently occupies the lighthouse there was once an old watchtower. It is a sober construction conditioned by its function of beacon and school of towers at its base. Its construction began in the year 1863 and was illuminated for the first time on January 31, 1865. The building rises 30 m above sea level according to Leonardo de Tejada`s project. It was used as a construction material stone ashlars brought from a quarry in the area of Sabinar.
