Gingko is the only living representative of the Gingkoales, an otherwise extinct group of seed plants. Natural populations are known only from the city of Chongqing and Guizhou province in southwest China. In East Asia, the tree is cultivated for its edible seeds or as a temple tree. It was brought to Europe from Japan by Dutch sailors and has been planted here as an ornamental tree since about 1730. As a medicinal plant, ginkgo is used for symptomatic treatment of brain-organic performance disorders. For the treatment of degenerative dementia, with vascular dementia or mixed forms of both and for the symptomatic treatment of arterial circulatory disorders as well as for dizziness vertigo and ringing in the ears tinnitus.
