The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis), also known as the Komodo monitor, is a large species of lizard. The captive breeding of Komodo dragons, the world’s largest lizards, is a difficult business. At the time when the valuable pair arrived in Prague, zoological gardens were still looking for the best way to care for Komodo dragons. Very few of these giant monitor lizards were living in Europe and successful breeding was rare. In Prague Zoo, however, caretakers approached this problem from a completely new and revolutionary angle, creating conditions that swerved away from existing practices in many respects.
