A view down a volcanic lava tube in Volcano National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. Nahuku, known as the Thurston Lava Tube, is a 500-year-old lava cave located at an altitude of 3,900 feet on Kilauea Crater in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Lava tubes like this are formed when lava flows rapidly during an eruption, with the exterior slowly cooling and hardening while the exterior stays hot and keeps flowing. The exterior cools and forms a wall- when the lava flow stops, the hot lava in the interior drains out, leaving a hollow tube. The N?huku lava tube is a 600 ft long cave with a ceiling height of over 20 feet high in some places.
