Khatyn memorial complex in the Republic of Belarus. Khatyn was a village in Belarus, destroyed on 22 March 1943 punitive expeditions in retaliation for the murder of several German soldiers. In accordance with the principle of collective punishment, 149 residents of Khatyn were burned alive or shot for possible assistance to guerrillas by villagers. In the punitive operations were part of the `118th schutzmannschaft battalion` and a special SS battalion `Dirlewanger`. In 1969, a memorial complex was opened on the site of the village. Khatyn became a symbol of mass killings of civilians, carried out by the Nazis and their collaborators in occupied Soviet territory during World war 2.
