Pictured is the Old Mosque of Shali Fortress in the Siwa Oasis in Egypt. It was completed in 1203 and is the oldest monument built in Shali as well as the oldest mosque contructed using kershif, a mixture of salt and mud-brick, and palm logs. Despite its small size and state of dilapidation, the mosque remains an important symbol of the community and a place of religious rituals and celebration.
