Within the Kandy, Royal Palace complex is the Dalada Maligawa, also known as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. The Buddha's tooth relic is kept there. It possessed incredible power in the past, up until British forces invaded Sri Lanka, when it was believed that whoever held the relic would control the nation. A superb example of Kandyan period wood carving is found on the wooden pillars that support the wooden roof. It was built in 1783 by Sri Rajadhi Rajasinha of Kandy. |
