Bhairava is an important deity of the Newars. All the traditional settlements of Newars have at least a temple of Bhairava. The Kala Bhairava Statue in Kathmandu Durbar Square is a 12-foot (3.7 m) high stone image of Bhairava and is said to have been sculpted in the 5th or 6th century. It is believed till date that people die if they lie in front of this sculpture. Today the temple is part of the Kathmandu Durbar Square Heritage Site
