John B. Anderson, a 10-term Republican Congressman from Illinois, campaigns for president in Chicago in 1980. He is joined by daughter Eleanora Anderson and wife, Keke Machakos Anderson. John Anderson evolved into a liberal Republican on social issues while remaining a fiscal conservative. He ran as an Independent and finished third behind Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter. It is widely believed that he got the votes of Democrats such as historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr. and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. He was an internationalist, serving as President of the World Federalist Society and a college professor in his later years. He died on Dec. 3, 2017 in Washington, DC at the age of 95. |
