Traunkirchen is a municipality in Upper Austria in the Gmunden district in the Traunviertel on Lake Traunsee. The Johannesberg Chapel bears the inscription “Once the hideout of pagan pirates, now dedicated to Saint John the Baptist”. This and the picture of the founding of the Traunkirchen monastery in today's rectory, which shows a battle and the overthrow of idol statues in the background, point to conflict-ridden times. The church lords probably did it here, probably in connection with the salt-rich but isolated from Traunstein and Sonnstein Upper Trauntal, it wasn't easy.
