Cristo Rei is a Catholic monument and chapel located in Almada, on the south side of the Tagus River in Lisbon, Portugal. It is a replica of the famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Lisbon region. The statue stands at a height of 100 meters and is visible from much of the city. It was built in 1959 as a symbol of thanksgiving for the country`s return to democracy after the end of the authoritarian regime in 1974. Visitors can take an elevator to the top of the statue, where they can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area and the city of Lisbon. The site also includes a chapel and a small museum.
