Originally called Adler Alley and runs between North Beach and Chinatown, in March 2007 the name was changed to Jack Kerouac Alley, who was one of the early and influential writers of The Beat Generation. Used originally as a dumbing ground by the adjacent stores, and as a shortcut by delivery trucks, it was the poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti, the owner of City Light Bookstore, who had the idea of adding the lights and murals, and repaving the road, to make it more pedestrian safe and pleasant. As seen in September 2021.
