Early style iron bridge was installed to enable emigrants to cross the North Platte during high water events. Settlers would stop at Fort Laramie, Wyoming, for supplies an d then travel on west over this bridge which was built in 1876. Merchants from Cheyenne used the bridge to bring supplies to the soldiers and Agents for the Indian nations on their reservations.
