| Taken with a fisheye lens, this is an interior view of the Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth, Israel in 1986. The structure, originally built as the Church of the Annunciation was constructed under Byzantine Roman rule about 570 A.D. It has been reconstructed several times, most recently by an Israeli architect in 1969. Pope John Paul II celebrated a mass at the structure, regarded by the Roman Catholic Church as a minor basilica, in the year 2000. Nazareth is in the Galilee and is inhabited by both Jews and Arabs. The latter population is now mostly Muslim. |
