The complex was once one of the most modern coal mines in the world. Built in the 1920s, it was active from the mid-19th century until 1986. It demonstrates the importance of heavy industry for Europe at that time. Although the mine has been closed since 1986, the complex has been given a new lease on life. The buildings are now used for cultural events, design, tourism, and entertainment. This demonstrates how industrial heritage can be successfully reused without losing its original character.
