Older female orange tabby cat enjoying the warm summer sun and cool green grass. Many cat lovers claim orange tabbies are extra affectionate and playful. They're often described as sweet, social, and even a bit goofy. Their coat can range from pale cream to deep orange, and many orange tabbies even exhibit very faint "ghost" stripes that are only noticeable under certain sunlight. The orange color is due to a pigment called pheomelanin, and the gene responsible for this coloring is located on the X chromosome, which explains why approximately 80% of orange tabby cats are male.
