The first castle was built on the Margraten Plateau in the 11th-13th century. The oldest parts of the building, such as the tower foundation, probably date from that time. The castle complex also consists of a four-winged main building and a U-shaped farm. The main building with a small courtyard is accessible via a footbridge over a dry moat. The west wing dates from the beginning of the 14th century and the north wing was built at the end of the 14th century. The east wing with the large round tower was added in the 15th century on older foundations.
