| Image of the central nave of the ruins of Convento Carmo in Lisbon Portugal. The Carmo Convent was one of the most important Catholic temples in Lisbon and rivaled the Cathedral itself in importance. It was built in the 14th century and displays many examples of Gothic and Neo-Gothic style. It fell into ruins during the great Lisbon earthquake in 1755 and was never rebuilt as a memory of the terrible catastrophe. Today the ruins house the Carmo Archaeological Museum |
